A wedding by the ocean in Maine... What a great idea! Let me tell you about our wedding...
Steven and I were married on a point overlooking the ocean. The ceremony was shaded by a century-old oak tree and enhanced by the sounds of the waves lapping the shore.
Actually, the wedding was spread over three days. Our guests either camped out on sites overlooking the ocean, stayed in local motels or reserved rooms in luxurious bed and breakfasts.
On Friday night we got together for a casual pot-luck supper in the rec. hall. Although it was rustic, we had white Christmas lights hanging from the rafters and candles on every table. Someone played the piano and everyone visited with everyone else.
Later Friday night, "the girls" and I retreated to a sumptuous Captains inn where we drank champagne and talked until one in a beautiful sitting room filled with fresh flowers. Saturday morning, we had a leisurely breakfast (French toast stuffed with peaches and cream) in the garden and soaked in claw-footed tubs before preparing for the late morning teaparty at the Inn. The gentleman guests kayaked in the bay, followed by Bloody Mary's and omeletes on the beach.
By one oclock the wedding guests gathered at the birch bridge for the processional to the ocean point. Led by violins, all of the guests walked the path under the pines and congregated where the groom, his men and minister were waiting on the ocean bluff. (This would be a perfect place for you to install a flower laced trellis!)
After the ceremony, the wedding party remained to be photographed by the ocean; the colorful sailboats in the background were an extra bonus. The guests went to the playground for appetizers. Soon everyone was ready to change into more casual clothes and the afternoon passed with people going back out in the kayaks, a lively volleyball game and a good opportunity to take a nap before the evening festivities.
That night, the path to the beach was lit by tiki torches and there was an old-fashioned lobsterbake for all of the guests. Everyone enjoyed the succulent lobster, steamers, mussels and corn on the cob on picnic tables lit by candelabras and strewn with fresh flowers. Music was provided by a well known bluegrass band and everyone danced by the flickering light of the bonfire. We laid out huge silver platters with the makings of smores and everyone took charge of their own dessert.
Sunday morning brought preparation for our wedding cruise. Fifty of our closest friends joined us for a tour of Penobscot Bay and a celebration with fruit covered cheesecakes and champagne mimosas. The playful porpoises and seals in the Bay added a memorable touch to our "wedding cake cruise." Three years later our friends still talk about our wedding on the Bay.
