Did you hear
about Mid-coast Maine's premier oceanfront campground? On
the shores of Penobscot Bay, located between bustling Bar Harbor
(Acadia National Park) and charming Camden village, you can find
camping sites overlooking the ocean. Searsport Shores Ocean Campground
offers old-fashioned camping fun in a family atmosphere.
Park
your RV along the ocean or in a pull-through site. Pitch your
tent in
a shady spot or camp under a canopy of stars. From this ocean
front
campground you can kayak
right from the beach, hike the nature trails, eat Maine lobster on the
shore, fish from the beach, explore tidal pools and join the kids in a
basketball game on the playground.
Want
solitude? We'll direct our campers to 900 uninhabited acres on an
easily accessible island, only 5 minutes away, for day use exploration
including hiking, boating and biking. At Searsport Shores Ocean
Campground, the fishing (and shopping) is good, the people are
friendly, the campfires are crackling and the ocean is inviting.
If
you really need to keep track of your life in the digital world, we
offer an online computer station, free wireless or an ethernet hookup.

Taste
old-time Maine...Lobsterbakes at Searsport Shores.
How do we do it?
Early in the
afternoon we build a fire to provide a hot bed of coals. Then we pull
on rubber boots and gather fresh seaweed while it's still full of salt
water.
About 45 minutes
before dinner, we pile the seaweed onto steel plates and add buckets of
steamers & mussels, local lobsters, fresh corn on the cob, and
mixed bags of sweet onions and potatoes.
We finish the
meal off with one of Astrig's favorite desserts. Often it's
peach/
blueberry Dutch Cobbler with locally made ice-cream and coffee. You
have just enjoyed a real Maine Lobsterbake.
Because it's all fresh- you MUST order in advance

myself? Call or write today weâll show you

Spring Cleaning and
Free Camping
Every year we host an event that I believe is unique to
Maine…we exchange free camping for help getting the
campground open in the Spring. When you think about it, the
weekend is
a win-win for everyone. We get help picking up the millions of
little
sticks on the ground (remember the Nor’easter last week?) and raking
the far corners of the Park; campers get to evaluate our campground
without spending any money. We get the benches put out on the
boardwalk and along the nature trails; campers get to meet people who
come here regularly. These
are the folks who will always tell the truth about vacationing in
Searsport. Finally we get help tending the bonfire and washing
the
windows; campers get to enjoy Saturday breakfast in the rec hall and a
barbeque lunch at the beach. Saturday night we all share a
potluck
supper in the rec hall. It’s my job to provide some sort of
amusement…it’s a task I take very seriously and I’m happy to say most
years have been very entertaining.
So when do we do it?
Always the second weekend in May…this year the 11th, 12th and
13th. We
ask people to call ahead because I can only cook for a limited number
of people. The requirements are that you bring a rake, gloves,
sense
of humor and that you help us Saturday morning. Things are pretty
relaxed. Children and pets get the run of the park.
Basically we make
a list of things that need to get done, ask anyone with special talents
to fess up so we can take advantage of specialty skills and then
everyone chooses their task…and I come around with cookies, coffee and
hot chocolate…anything to keep the energy levels high!
We’d love to have you join us if this sounds fun. Call me
at 207.548.6059
so that I can save a place for you…bring friends! And pack layers
of
clothing…there’s no predicting the weather and like old vaudville, the show must go on! Use Searsport Shores as your home base for
Seven
Wonderful Days exploring the Maine Coast
<
Let your imagination run wild... What
would make your vacation perfect? Kayaking in the shadow of a
lighthouse, accompanied by curious seals and majestic loons? Museums
that display their world-class treasures and help you to make sense of
the past? Picture perfect historical villages filled with wonderful
restaurants and galleries? A sunset schooner ride where the Captain
actually encourages you to bring your wine and cheese aboard? The
possibilities are endless, let us help you plan seven wonderful days
all within one hour of your campsite.
Day One.
Bar Harbor and Acadia
National Park -Hike and bike hundreds of miles of trails on
your own or join a guided tour. We provide trail maps and offer
professional guide service of the park. The only national park on the
Eastern Coast Seacoast, Acadia provides a rich combination of
elements-land and sea, woodland, lake and mountain-no one of which
dominates another. The second most visited park in America, Acadia's
41,645 acres evokes the strongest, most long-lasting response from the
greatest number of people. If you are looking for a whale watch, you
might ride a Catamaran with the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co.
Day Two
Islesboro-Take
a ferry to this turn of-the-century island with its picturesque vistas
and movie star homes. The ferry to Islesboro
leaves from Lincolnville Beach every hour during the summer. Isleboro
is a lovely island to explore by bike or on foot because it is long and
flat. Everywhere there are views of Camden Hills across the sparkling
waters.
If kayaking is your thing, follow the self-guided tour
around Isleboro and to Warren Island provided by Water Walker Sea Kayaks
Day Three
Castine-Tour
the pristine 1700’s architecture, visit the Maine Maritime Academy and
stroll along cobblestone sidewalks shaded by century old elm trees.
Lovely shops to explore and wonderful restaurants along the town pier.
Make a day of it and explore Fort Point State Park (lighthouse, fishing
pier), Fort Knox (wear a hard hat and explore dark tunnels), Stonington
(a working lobster village) and Deer Isle (home of the famous Haystack
School of Art).
Day
Four
Searsport
A century ago, one in every 10 American shipmasters hailed from this
tiny town. Searsport was the launching area for over 200 world
traveled, multi-masted ships.
Browse the renowned Penobscot
Marine Museum
in the morning and then hunt the hundreds of Antique/Flea markets in
the afternoon. Come back to the campground for a fresh lobster dinner
and your own crackling camp fire with s'mores.
Day Five
Wake up
and walk across the street to our favorite Italian Bakery,
Abbracci Bakery & Espresso Bar specialzing in homemade
baked goods, great lunches and gourmet espresso drinks.
After you've gotten your fill, drive up the road to Searsport
Pines Golf Course.
It's a beautiful, well-maintained & challenging 9-hole course
(2695/36 par) that can be played as 18 holes. Features include: driving
range, pro-shop, practice/putting green, cart rentals and club rentals.
"The Gazebo" serves popular favorites for a light or hearty lunch with
specials that change daily.
In the afternoon, visit with some of America's favorite works
of art, including famous Wyeth paintings at the Farnsworth Art
Museum or tour the grand collections of working antique planes,
autos, bikes and carriages at the Owls Head Transportation Museum all in
Rockland.
Day Six
Travel
a few miles down the coast along the Lincolnville Beach into Camden Harbor.
Camden Maine is considered to be one of the most beautiful towns on
Earth. Spend time wandering through the specialty boutiques and
micro-breweries.
Shape
magazine recently wrote "The Camden-Rockport area depicts itself as the
town where the mountains meet the sea. And they do. Steep hills form a
bulwark against the sea, creating a rugged, dramatic landscape. In
fact, the trails at Camden Snow Bowl, the local ski and mountain-biking
area, overlook Penobscot Bay, the deepest inlet along Maine's serrated
coast and reminiscent of a Scandinavian fiord."
As
the sun dips into the horizon, pack your favorite bottle of wine and
cheese, and relax on a coastal sunset cruise. Your shutter will be
clicking as you breeze by seals, dolphins, sea birds and an occasional
whale. Don't forget your Searsport Shores Windjammer discount pass,
available at the office.
Day
Seven
Belfast...quaint,
artsy and not touristy! Dine in fine restaurants, enjoy the children’s
waterfront park and take a train ride- all in one day. Later cruise
over to Castine or kayak from the campground around beautiful Penobscot
Bay alongside the porpoise and seals.
Get a
hold of Nancy Maier at Pedaling.com
for self guided bike routes throughout Maine. They have great ideas for
scenic, novice or advanced rides. Clubs and competitors will also find
many helpful tips.
If
architecture is "your thing" then you will enjoy wandering the
neighborhood of Federal and early-Victorian sea merchant's mansions. Be
sure to take along a copy of the "Walking Tour of Belfast" for an
interesting and informative narrative.
In the evening join the Belfast Maskers for a
performance at the Railroad Theatre on the Bay.
The Frommer’s Guide:
The Unofficial Guide to the Best RV & Tent Campgrounds

mid-coastal Maine campground, boasting 1,200 feet of scenic ocean
